In short: Spanning over 90,000 square kilometers, Chifeng is a sprawling prefecture-level city in Inner Mongolia with a history reaching back ten millennia. From the ancient Neolithic Hongshan Culture to its modern status as a vital industrial and agricultural hub, this city serves as a critical bridge between northern and northeastern China.

Human occupation in the Chifeng region dates back at least ten thousand years, with Neolithic history tracing back nearly eight millennia. The area is home to the Hongshan Culture, which flourished from approximately 4700 to 2900 BC, and the Xinglongwa village site, often celebrated as the first village. Archaeological excavations have uncovered more than 6,800 sites, including the famous jade dragon, highlighting the region's deep historical significance. During the Liao era, the area served as a vital political center, housing the capital Shangjing Linhuangfu.

Geographically, Chifeng is a diverse landscape where the Inner Mongolia Plateau meets the Yan Mountains and the Greater Khingan range. The city sits along the upper reaches of the Xiliao River, experiencing a continental semi-arid climate characterized by cold, windy winters and hot, humid summers. Despite its harsh winters, the region receives abundant sunshine, totaling about 2,866 hours annually. This environment supports a robust economy, with the city acting as a major base for agriculture, animal husbandry, and mineral extraction, including coal, gold, and various nonferrous metals.

In the modern era, Chifeng has evolved into a key transportation and economic nexus. Following the dissolution of the Ju Ud League in 1983, the city has pursued aggressive development strategies focused on ecological construction and industrialization. Today, it functions as a central goods interflow hub connecting Inner Mongolia with neighboring provinces like Hebei and Liaoning. With a population exceeding four million as of the 2020 census, the city continues to balance its rich archaeological heritage with its role as a modern industrial powerhouse for eastern Inner Mongolia.
