A royal residence turned ruin, this Kyiv church holds the secrets of Moscow's founder.
In short: Located just north of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, the Church of the Saviour at Berestove stands as a testament to centuries of architectural evolution. Once a suburban retreat for Kievan Rus' royalty, the site has survived Mongol invasions, centuries of decay, and multiple ambitious restorations to remain a landmark of global significance.
Originally established as a court church during the reign of Vladimir Monomakh between 1113 and 1125, the structure served as a burial site for the Monomachid dynasty. Among those interred beneath its baptistery was George I of Kiev, historically recognized as the founder of Moscow. The church was an architectural pioneer for its time, introducing projecting porches with trefoil roofs and eschewing limestone in favor of intricate brickwork, a design choice that foreshadowed mid-12th-century building practices.
The church's fortunes fluctuated alongside the history of Kyiv. It suffered severe damage during the 1240 Mongol sack by Batu Khan and again in 1482 under Khan Meñli I Giray, leaving it in ruins for centuries. It was not until the 17th century that Metropolitan Petro Mohyla initiated a major restoration, rebuilding the structure in a proto-Baroque style. This version incorporated the original western wall of Monomakh’s church but introduced a distinct five-tower plan topped with pear-shaped domes.
Modern efforts have focused on preserving these layered histories. In 1909, Academician Pokryshkin attempted to restore the building to its medieval appearance, while later projects in the 21st century—supported by the Getty Foundation and private patronage—have utilized advanced scientific surveys to uncover hidden reconstructions from the 14th to 16th centuries. Today, the church functions as a museum within the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Historical-Cultural Reserve, housing precious 12th-century frescoes like the Miraculous Fishing, which was only rediscovered in the 1970s.
