How a single 111-minute shot set a world record
In short: For decades, this Indian police procedural has been a staple of television. Beyond its long run and cult following, it achieved a rare feat: a single, continuous 111-minute episode that earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
Premiering on Sony Entertainment Television on 21 January 1998, CID is one of India's longest-running television series. Created by B. P. Singh, the show follows a team of officers, including ACP Pradyuman, Senior Inspector Daya, and Senior Inspector Abhijeet, as they navigate complex criminal investigations. While much of the series is set in Mumbai, the production has traveled extensively, filming in locations ranging from Delhi and Kolkata to international destinations like London, Paris, and Switzerland. The ensemble features notable characters such as Inspector Fredricks and the forensic expert Dr Salunkhe. Additionally, the production has visited diverse Indian cities including Agra, Rishikesh, and Manali.
The series has seen significant milestones and shifts in format. It reached its 500th episode on 18 January 2008 and its 1500th on 4 March 2018. While the original run concluded on 27 October 2018, the show saw a revival with a second season that began airing in December 2024 and expanded to streaming platforms like Netflix in early 2025. The show's longevity is marked by its 1000th episode broadcast in September 2013. This revival era also saw the series gain popularity on streaming services like Sony LIV.
Beyond the standard episodic format, the series has experimented with various spin-offs and special content. This includes the 2004–2006 series CID Special Bureau and the 2013 children's spin-off CID Chhote Heroes. The show's impact is evidenced by its massive viewership, maintaining high TRP ratings for years and even inspiring a mobile video game, CID - The Game. The franchise's reach extends to an animated series titled CID Squad. Furthermore, a Bengali-language version called C.I.D. Kolkata Bureau was broadcast on Sony Aath.
