In short: Founded in 1925 by friends in a La Paz home, Club Bolivar evolved from a local social group into the most successful football team in Bolivia. Known as Los Celestes for their iconic light blue kits, the club has navigated financial crises and wars to become a consistent force in South American tournaments.

Club Bolivar was established on 12 April 1925 in La Paz, near Plaza Murillo. Originally named the Club Atletico Literario Musical Bolivar, the founders intended it as a social club for sports. The name was chosen to honor the military leader Simon Bolivar, a departure from the English-inspired naming conventions common among Bolivian teams at the time. By 1927, the club had officially joined the La Paz Football Association, marking the start of its competitive journey.

The club's history is deeply intertwined with the nation's challenges. In 1932, Bolivar secured its first championship title, though the season was interrupted by the Chaco War between Bolivia and Paraguay. The club's resilience was tested again in 1964 when it suffered its only relegation, only to return to the top flight the following year. Later, in 2008, the club faced a severe financial crisis with debts exceeding US$5 million, which was resolved when millionaire Marcelo Claure took control through his company, BAISA.

Internationally, Bolivar has consistently represented Bolivia on the biggest stages. It is the only Bolivian club to reach the semi-finals of the Copa Libertadores, achieving this feat in 1986 and 2014. In 2004, the team reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana, finishing as runners-up to Boca Juniors. These performances have earned the club respect across the continent, often by defeating the eventual tournament champions during their campaigns.

Today, the club operates under a long-term vision known as Plan Centenario, launched in 2021. This initiative aims to modernize the club's infrastructure and expand ownership to fans by its 2025 centenary. With 31 league titles in the professional era, Bolivar remains the most decorated club in the country, continuing to balance its rich history with modern ambitions as a partner of the City Football Group.
