In short: Founded in 1927, Coleraine F.C. has navigated financial collapse and historic European milestones. From winning the Irish League to becoming the first UK team to play a competitive match in the Soviet Union, the Bannsiders have maintained a resilient presence in the NIFL Premiership for nearly a century.

Coleraine F.C. emerged in June 1927 following the merger of local sides Coleraine Olympic and Coleraine Alexandra. Originally nicknamed the Lilywhites for their all-white kit, the club eventually adopted blue and white colours. Their early years were marked by steady progress, securing their first trophy, the Gold Cup, in the 1931–32 season. By the mid-20th century, the club had established itself as a formidable force in Northern Irish football, winning the Irish League title in 1973–74 and claiming the Irish Cup seven times, most recently in 2025–26.

The club achieved international notoriety in 1965. After winning their first Irish Cup, they faced Dynamo Kiev, marking the first time a team from the United Kingdom competed in a match held behind the Iron Curtain. This era of ambition continued with success in all-Ireland competitions, including the Blaxnit Cup in 1969 and 1970. Despite these highs, the club faced severe instability, including a 2006 liquidation and subsequent restructuring under Calver Holdings Ltd. Financial pressures, including debts of £1.3 million in 2005, forced the club to operate under strict budget constraints.

Modern Coleraine remains a competitive fixture in the NIFL Premiership. Under managers like Oran Kearney, the club has balanced domestic consistency with European aspirations, including a notable 2020 victory against Slovenian champions NK Maribor. While the club has experienced periods of struggle, such as their 1995 relegation to the First Division, their ability to rebuild—supported by fans and strategic leadership—has ensured their survival. Today, the club continues to play at The Showgrounds, maintaining a fierce rivalry with Ballymena United while striving for further silverware in the top flight.
