From a simple gingerbread escape to a global franchise with over 200 million users
In short: Inspired by the classic tale of The Gingerbread Man, the Cookie Run series has evolved from a mobile endless runner into a sprawling multimedia universe. Developed by Devsisters, this franchise now spans diverse genres, from RPGs and puzzle games to VR adventures, captivating players across 243 countries worldwide.
The franchise began with the 2009 release of OvenBreak, a game centered on gingerbread cookies escaping a witch's oven. This initial concept grew into a robust intellectual property, with the original Cookie Run game launching on KakaoTalk in 2013 and later on LINE in 2014, eventually accumulating over 114 million downloads. The series utilizes a freemium model, allowing players to access core gameplay for free while offering optional in-game purchases for items and abilities.
As the series matured, it expanded far beyond its running roots. Cookie Run: Kingdom, released in 2021, introduced an alternate universe blending collectible RPG elements with social kingdom-building. The franchise has since diversified into various formats, including the block puzzle game Cookie Run: Witch's Castle, the top-down action title Cookie Run: Tower of Adventures, and the 2025 3D fighter and MOBA, Cookie Run: OvenSmash. Even virtual reality has been explored with the 2023 release of the roguelike adventure, Cookie Run: The Darkest Night.
The series has achieved significant international recognition, earning numerous accolades such as the 2021 Korea Game Awards Grand Prize for Kingdom and the 2024 Google Play Best Game of the Year for Tower of Adventures. By 2025, the brand reached over 200 million global users. Looking ahead, the franchise continues to scale, with a film adaptation currently in development by Big Shot Pictures, scheduled for a 2029 release to mark the 20th anniversary of the original title.
