In short: Known as the Millennium City, Cuttack has served as a vital capital and cultural hub for over a thousand years. Now, the city is shedding its colonial-era anglicised name to embrace its roots as Kataka, a Sanskrit-derived term for a fort, reflecting a broader movement to restore Odisha's linguistic heritage.

Established in 989 CE by King Nrupa Keshari, Cuttack was originally a military cantonment built around the ancient Barabati Fort. The city’s name, Kataka, literally translates to 'fort' or 'military establishment' in Sanskrit. Over the centuries, it evolved into a major commercial and judicial center, serving as the capital for various dynasties, including the Gangas and the Suryavamsi Gajapatis, before becoming a key provincial seat under the Mughals.

The city’s identity is deeply tied to its geography at the apex of the Mahanadi River delta. Its strategic location between the Kathajodi and Mahanadi rivers facilitated trade and cultural exchange, famously linking the region to Southeast Asian islands like Bali, Java, and Sumatra. This maritime history is still celebrated today through the annual Bali Jatra festival, which commemorates the ancient voyages of Kalinga merchants. The city’s cultural landscape is equally rich, featuring a blend of Hindu, Sikh, Jain, and Christian influences, alongside a culinary tradition that makes it the street food capital of Odisha.

In June 2026, the Odisha state government officially restored the city's name to Kataka, correcting what officials described as colonial-era distortions that diluted the state's linguistic identity. This decision followed a formal proposal by Mayor Subhash Chandra Singh, who cited archival records from Ravenshaw College to support the change. By aligning its name with its original Odia phonetic form, the city aims to preserve its historical legacy while continuing its role as a vibrant, modern urban center.
