In short: The Santiago Metropolitan Region is Chile's only landlocked administrative division, yet it dominates the nation. Home to over seven million people, this densely populated valley holds the capital city, produces nearly half of the country's GDP, and boasts a development index that ranks among the highest in South America.

Nestled in the Intermediate Depression between the Chilean Coast Range and the Andes, the region is defined by its unique geography. It spans 15,403.2 square kilometers and is characterized by a temperate, continental Mediterranean climate. The coastal mountains act as a screen, shielding the valley from marine influence and resulting in a distinct precipitation pattern. While the city of Santiago experiences an annual median precipitation of 360 mm, the region's rural areas can see temperatures plummet to -10 °C during the coldest months of July and August.

The region's administrative evolution reflects its central importance. While European influence began in 1542 shortly after Santiago's founding, the modern Metropolitan Region was not formally created until 1980. Today, it is governed by an elected governor, currently Claudio Orrego Larraín, and is subdivided into 6 provinces and 52 communes. The capital serves as the nation's primary industrial and financial hub, housing critical infrastructure like the Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport and the headquarters for various United Nations organizations.

Beyond its urban sprawl, the region holds significant natural and economic resources. The high Andes host substantial copper deposits, including the active Los Bronces mine and the unexploited prospect of Catedral. Meanwhile, the fertile valley floor, once home to a much larger range of the endangered Chilean Wine Palm, now supports a mix of modern high-rise districts and historic 19th-century wineries. With 96.2% of its population living in urban areas, the region remains the undisputed center of Chilean life, contributing 41.5% of the national gross domestic product.
