How a YouTube-focused startup grew into a multi-billion dollar music industry powerhouse

Create Music Group began in early 2015 when founders Jonathan Strauss, Alexandre Williams, and Wayne Hampton identified a gap in the digital market: unclaimed revenue for artists on YouTube. Strauss initially invested $1 million, later securing a seed round of $2.25 million. By January 2019, the company was monetizing approximately 9 billion streams per month. This rapid growth led Inc. Magazine to name it the fastest-growing private company in California and the second-fastest in the United States in 2020.
The company’s strategy relies on a blend of internal development and external acquisition. In 2016, it acquired Label Engine, followed by the digital media brand Flighthouse. Its international footprint expanded significantly in the 2020s, starting with the purchase of Mumbai-based Nirvana Digital in 2021. Further acquisitions included the viral marketing agency VRTCL, Music For Pets, and a 50% stake in the British label Enhanced Music. By 2025, the company had acquired the discography of Deadmau5 and labels like Monstercat and Cr2 Records.
Financial momentum has accelerated in recent years. In June 2024, the company raised $165 million at a $1 billion valuation. By March 2026, a further $450 million in equity and debt pushed its valuation to $2.2 billion, with the founders retaining majority control. This capital supports initiatives like Circuit Capital, which launched in November 2025 with over $500 million to acquire music assets. Beyond acquisitions, the company maintains a robust partnership model, collaborating with artists and producers such as Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo, and Ty Dolla $ign to manage diverse label imprints and publishing interests.
