In short: Founded in 1909 by the Poppe brothers, Sport Club Internacional was built on a radical principle: to be a democratic institution without prejudice. While rivals catered to specific ethnic groups, Inter opened its doors to all, eventually becoming a powerhouse that redefined success in South America.

At its inception in Porto Alegre, the club's identity was defined by its refusal to follow the discriminatory patterns of its contemporaries. While other major clubs primarily served descendants of German immigrants, the Poppe brothers—Henrique, José Eduardo, and Luiz Madeira—envisioned a club for both Brazilians and foreigners. This inclusive philosophy was cemented by the club's colors, red and white, chosen via a vote inspired by the city's street carnaval.

This commitment to diversity provided a competitive advantage on the pitch. In 1928, Internacional began including black players in its squad, a move their rival Grêmio did not adopt until 1952. This decision strengthened the 'Colorado' squad, which became known as the 'Rolo Compressor' (Steamroller) during a dominant period from 1939 to 1948, when they won eight Rio Grande do Sul championships and achieved six consecutive state titles.

The club's rise is deeply tied to its community. The construction of their iconic Estádio Beira-Rio, inaugurated on April 6, 1969, was largely fueled by the mobilization of fans who provided bricks, cement, and iron. Today, Internacional is a massive membership-based organization with more than 140,000 associates. The club has achieved significant international success, including winning the Copa Libertadores in 2006 and 2010, and the FIFA Club World Cup in 2006 by defeating Barcelona.

The club's home, the Estádio Beira-Rio, has a capacity of 50,128 and was notably one of the twelve venues used for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
