How a French influence shaped the identity of a Brazilian football giant
In short: Founded in 1918, Fortaleza Esporte Clube carries the colors of the French flag. This Brazilian multi-sport club, based in Ceará, has evolved from its early roots to become one of the most successful football teams in the Northeast, boasting a massive fan base and a storied history of regional dominance.
Fortaleza Esporte Clube was officially born on 18 October 1918 as Fortaleza Sporting Club. The club's distinctive red, blue, and white colors were a deliberate choice by its founder, Alcides Santos, who had spent time in France and wished to honor the European nation's flag. While primarily a football club, the organization is a multi-sport entity, actively competing in basketball, futsal, and handball.
The club's identity is deeply tied to its home in the Pici district. In 1957, the club acquired land in Bairro do Pici from Mrs. Hedwing—an area that had served as the American military's 'Post Command' during the Second World War—in exchange for land in Gentilândia. This link gave the squad the moniker 'Leão do Pici' (Lion of Pici), named after the district housing the Parque dos Campeonatos. A reporter proposed the lion emblem during the 1960s, influenced by Fortaleza's 'Square of Lions'.
The club has traditionally ruled the Brazilian Northeast, claiming 46 state championships and 3 Copa do Nordeste trophies. They are recognized as having the second-largest fan base in the region, trailing only EC Bahia. Recent years have seen the club reach new heights, including a 4th place finish in the 2021 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, which secured their first-ever qualification for the Copa Libertadores. In 2023, they achieved a notable 2nd place finish in the Copa Sudamericana, ultimately losing to L.D.U. Quito.
