In short: Founded by Italian immigrants in 1914 as Palestra Itália, the club was forced to shed its heritage during World War II. Under government pressure to ban names linked to Axis powers, the team rebranded as Palmeiras, famously declaring they were born to be champions despite the intense political turmoil.

The club was established on 26 August 1914 by Italian immigrants in São Paulo, aiming to represent the local Italian community. Initially named Palestra Itália, the club grew rapidly, winning its first state title in 1920 and constructing a stadium that featured the first concrete grandstands in Brazil by 1933. However, the onset of World War II brought severe pressure. In 1942, the Brazilian government banned organizations from using names associated with Axis powers, including Italy.

Facing the threat of asset seizure and expulsion from the league, the club board held a desperate meeting on the eve of the 1942 state championship final. Dr. Mario Minervino proposed the name Palmeiras, marking a definitive break from their Italian identity. The team entered the final match carrying the Brazilian flag, and after a controversial penalty, their opponents, São Paulo Futebol Clube, abandoned the field. Palmeiras was declared the winner, and the next day, newspapers hailed the birth of a new champion.

Beyond the name change, Palmeiras has a complex history regarding global recognition. In 1951, they won the Copa Rio, an eight-team tournament that served as the first intercontinental competition of the pre-international era. While FIFA has praised the tournament's importance in globalizing club football, the organization does not officially recognize Palmeiras as intercontinental champions. Despite this, the club remains a titan of Brazilian football, having won a record 12 Campeonato Brasileiro Série A titles and maintaining a massive fanbase of approximately 15 million people.
