From being laughed at by boys to becoming a national hero
In short: Growing up in the Netherlands, Daniëlle van de Donk was mocked by boys for playing football. They stayed silent only after she proved her skill. Today, she is a decorated midfielder who helped lead the Netherlands to historic victories and earned a prestigious knighthood for her contributions to the sport.
Van de Donk's journey began in Valkenswaard, where she started playing for SV Valkenswaard at age 4. Her early career was defined by overcoming gender barriers; her uncle recalled that boys at FC Eindhoven laughed at her until she demonstrated her ability by playing three balls perfectly. She eventually turned professional at 17 with Willem II, though her early path was hampered by a significant anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during her second season (2009–10).
Her career trajectory took her across Europe, from the Dutch Eredivisie to the Swedish Damallsvenskan, before she joined Arsenal in 2015. At Arsenal, she became a cornerstone of the team, contributing to a 2016 FA Cup title and a 2018–19 championship season where she recorded 23 combined goals and assists. Her technical skill gained international attention, including a viral 'double nutmeg' in November 2018, and she was eventually signed by the French giants Lyon in 2021.
On the international stage, Van de Donk became a symbol of the 'ridiculous' growth of Dutch women's football. She played an integral role in the Netherlands' 2017 UEFA Euro victory, where she scored in the semi-final against England. In 2019, she was hailed as 'Holland's best player tonight' by The Guardian during a historic run to the World Cup final. For her role in the 2017 Euro triumph, she was honored with the title of Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau by the Dutch Prime Minister.
