The gateway to Bengal and the heart of the Mithila region
In short: Known as the 'Cultural Capital of Bihar,' Darbhanga is one of India's oldest cities. From the ancient musical traditions of dhrupad to the global dominance of the fox nut, this historic hub sits atop a fertile alluvial plain that has sustained the Mithila region for generations.
Darbhanga serves as a vital cultural and economic engine in North Bihar. The city served as the Darbhanga Raj capital, a 16th-century estate that features Anandbagh Palace, and was once the Khandwala zamidaar dynasty's seat. The city's very name is often linked to 'Dwār Banga,' meaning the 'door of Bengal,' though historians note that the actual division between Bengal and Bihar lies further east.
The region's economy is deeply rooted in its geography. Situated on a vast alluvial plain with marshes and lakes, the area is a premier global production center for Euryale ferox, or Makhana (fox nut). The Mithila wetland region provides up to 80–90% of the world's fox nut supply, and the local 'Mithila Makhana' variety was awarded a Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2022.
Beyond agriculture, Darbhanga is a significant educational and medical hub. Both Kameshwara Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University (founded 1961) and Lalit Narayan Mithila University (founded 1972) are located here. The city is also expanding its medical infrastructure with the construction of AIIMS Darbhanga and the existing Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital.
As the city modernizes, it is poised for significant infrastructure growth. By the end of 2029, a metro railway service is expected to be operational, featuring an 18.8-kilometre line with 18 stations. Additionally, the Amas–Darbhanga Expressway is being developed as Bihar's first dedicated expressway to connect the city to the state capital, Patna.
