In short: At age four, David Villa’s footballing future seemed over after a severe femur fracture. But what could have been a career-ending injury became a hidden advantage, forcing him to master his left leg and creating a legendary, dual-footed clinical finisher.

Born in 1981 in the Asturian village of Tuilla, David Villa’s path to becoming Spain's all-time leading international goalscorer was shaped by physical adversity. When he was four years old, a fracture to his right femur put his athletic prospects in jeopardy. To compensate for the leg in plaster, his father, José Manuel Villa, worked with him to strengthen his left side. This rigorous training resulted in Villa becoming effectively ambidextrous, a trait that would later define his efficiency in front of goal.

His professional ascent was marked by both incredible talent and significant skepticism. Early in his career, Real Oviedo dismissed him as being too short for the professional game. However, Villa found his footing at Sporting de Gijón, eventually moving to Real Zaragoza in 2003 for approximately €3 million. It was here that he first demonstrated his clinical nature, notably scoring all four goals in a 4–4 draw against Sevilla in April 2004.

Villa's career reached its zenith through high-profile moves to Valencia and Barcelona. At Valencia, he achieved a remarkable goal ratio of 0.84 goals per game, matching the seasonal totals of legends like Mario Kempes and Predrag Mijatović but doing so in fewer matches. His move to Barcelona in 2010 brought him Champions League and La Liga glory, including scoring in the 2011 final. Beyond the club level, he led Spain to victory in Euro 2008 and the 2010 FIFA World Cup, retiring from international play with 59 goals in 98 appearances.

Even after leaving the European giants, Villa's impact remained profound. In Major League Soccer with New York City, he became the club's record goalscorer and appearance maker, earning the MLS MVP award in 2016. His journey, from a child in Asturias to a global icon, remains a testament to the resilience of a player who turned a broken bone into a competitive edge.
