How a chance encounter in a music shop defined the sound of Donkey Kong
In short: David Wise, the visionary composer behind the Donkey Kong Country series, did not set out to become a game music icon. His career began after a spontaneous demonstration of a Yamaha computer for two founders of the developer Rare, leading to a legendary tenure that redefined atmospheric video game soundtracks.
David Wise joined Rare in 1985, serving as the company's sole musician until 1994. His path into the industry was unconventional; while working in a music shop, he demonstrated a Yamaha CX5 Music Computer to Tim and Chris Stamper. Impressed by the music he had written and programmed for the demonstration, the founders offered him a position. His first project for the studio was the 1986 NES skiing game Slalom, but he would eventually gain widespread acclaim for his atmospheric approach to the Donkey Kong Country series.
Wise is known for blending natural environmental sounds with percussive and melodic elements. His process was highly technical; rather than relying on standardized MIDI instruments, he coded customized instruments to achieve his specific sonic vision. This ambition led critics to describe him as Rare's most ambitious composer. His influences were diverse, ranging from the work of Koji Kondo on Super Mario and The Legend of Zelda to synthesized film scores and early 1980s rock and dance music. He also drew inspiration from his personal life, noting that the track 'Aquatic Ambience' was born from a failed relationship, while the soundtrack for Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest was shaped by what he called an 'experimental Paris phase'.
After resigning from Rare in 2009, citing a shift in the company's creative direction, Wise established his own studio. His influence has persisted through collaborations and remix projects, such as the 2010 release of Serious Monkey Business. He later returned to the Donkey Kong franchise for Tropical Freeze after a request from Retro Studios president Michael Kelbaugh. Today, Wise remains a celebrated figure, having contributed to numerous titles including Star Fox Adventures and Yooka-Laylee, leaving a lasting mark on the evolution of interactive audio.
The technical depth of his work is matched by his versatility as a multi-instrumentalist. Having started on the piano, he later mastered the trumpet and drums, skills that informed his approach to composition. Even after leaving his long-term role at Rare, he continued to engage with his own legacy, remixing tracks like 'Jungle Jitter' for fan-led projects, proving that his unique, ambient style remains a touchstone for game music enthusiasts worldwide.
