The championship team that won it all with a losing record
In short: In 2023, the Renegades defied the logic of sports by clinching an XFL title despite finishing their regular season with more losses than wins. This underdog run transformed a struggling franchise into champions, navigating a complex history of rebranding and league mergers to reach the top.
The Dallas Renegades' journey is marked by significant identity shifts. Originally founded by Vince McMahon's Alpha Entertainment, the team was briefly known as the Arlington Renegades before reverting to its original name for the 2026 UFL season. This evolution coincided with a move from Choctaw Stadium in Arlington to Toyota Stadium in Frisco. Their branding has also seen fluctuations; notably, the 'Billy the Bandit' logo was reduced to secondary status during the Arlington era before returning as the primary helmet logo in 2025.
The team's most remarkable feat occurred in 2023. Despite a 4–6 regular season record, they secured both playoff victories to be crowned XFL champions. Their path to the title included an upset over the Houston Roughnecks in the South Division and a dramatic 35–26 victory against the D.C. Defenders at the Alamodome. In that championship game, quarterback Luis Perez threw for 288 yards and three touchdowns, ensuring the team never trailed during the contest.
The franchise's history is also tied to broader league mechanics. Following a 2019 launch where Bob Stoops became the first XFL head coaching hire, the league faced a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In late 2023, the XFL and USFL merged to form the United Football League (UFL). This merger reshaped rivalries; for instance, the 'Texas Throwdown' against Houston was rebranded as the 'Battle of Texas' for 2026, while the in-state rivalry with San Antonio ended after the Brahmas folded.
The Renegades now operate in a dense sports market. They currently share the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex with the NFL's Dallas Cowboys and a variety of other professional teams across leagues like the NHL, NBA, MLB, and MLS.
