From a child's coach's daughter to a multi-national chess champion
In short: Dina Belenkaya didn't just learn chess; she inherited a legacy. Taught by her mother—who also coached world-class talent—Belenkaya navigated a complex journey through three different national federations to become a Woman Grandmaster and a key figure in European club chess.
Belenkaya's path to the top began in St. Petersburg, where her mother, Asya Kovalyova, served as a children's chess coach for over 30 years. This lineage of expertise is notable; Kovalyova was the first coach of Anish Giri, who reached a world ranking of No. 3. Dina began competing at age five and worked with FIDE Master Andrey Praslov at age 10. While her junior career was modest, she broke through in 2011 at age 17, winning the Russian Women's Championship First League with a performance rating of 2543.
Her rise to the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title in 2016 was defined by consistency in international 'open' tournaments. Between 2014 and 2016, she secured three WGM norms in France, notably at the Open International d'Echecs d'Avoine, where she earned a bronze medal with a performance rating of 2557. Despite reaching a peak FIDE rating of 2364, her career has been marked by significant transitions, including switching federations from Russia to Israel in March 2022, and finally to France in June 2026.
Beyond individual accolades, Belenkaya has become a cornerstone of European club chess. Since 2015, she has competed in the Women's Bundesliga in Germany, helping her club, Bad Königshofen, secure back-to-back league titles in 2018–19 and 2019–21. Her influence extends to the digital era as well; in 2020, she and her sister launched 'TheBelenkaya' on Twitch and YouTube, bridging the gap between elite over-the-board competition and online chess commentary.
