In short: Formed in Los Angeles in 1982, the band Dio became a heavy metal powerhouse led by the late Ronnie James Dio. Beyond their ten studio albums and 50 million records sold, the group left a lasting mark on pop culture, influencing everything from video games to television and manga.

The band emerged from the ashes of Ronnie James Dio's departure from Black Sabbath in 1982. Alongside drummer Vinny Appice, Dio sought to forge a new path, quickly recruiting bassist Jimmy Bain and guitarist Jake E. Lee. Their debut album, Holy Diver, released in May 1983, catapulted them to fame with hits like "Rainbow in the Dark." The band was defined by its mascot, Murray—a demonic figure appearing on early album covers—and a rotating cast of world-class musicians, including guitarists Vivian Campbell and Craig Goldy.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the band navigated shifting musical landscapes. While early records like The Last in Line and Sacred Heart cemented their status in the metal scene, the 1990s saw a stylistic pivot toward modern issues, a period that remains debated by fans. By the 2000s, the band returned to their signature sound with the well-received Magica, which many critics viewed as a triumphant comeback. Despite numerous lineup changes, Ronnie James Dio remained the sole constant until his death from stomach cancer in 2010.

The band's legacy extends far beyond their discography. Their influence is woven into diverse media: the NES game Holy Diver, the antagonist Dio Brando in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, and even a prominent costume piece in Netflix's Stranger Things. Today, the band's spirit lives on through projects like Dio Disciples and Last in Line, where former members continue to perform the music that defined a generation of heavy metal fans.
