In short: Born from a split in the Dravidian movement in 1949, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) reshaped Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. By championing social equality and opposing Hindi imposition, it became the first party to break the Indian National Congress’s electoral dominance, leaving a legacy of subaltern representation and linguistic pride.

The DMK traces its ideological roots to the 1916 Justice Party, which sought to address the disproportionate influence of Brahmins in government jobs within the Madras Presidency. By the mid-20th century, this sentiment evolved into a broader Dravidian movement. In 1949, C. N. Annadurai broke away from Periyar’s Dravidar Kazhagam to form the DMK, specifically to engage in electoral politics—a move Periyar had vehemently opposed. The party’s philosophy emphasized subaltern empowerment, aiming to provide political representation to former lower castes and foster a more pluralist democracy.

The party’s rise was marked by intense cultural and linguistic activism, particularly regarding the anti-Hindi imposition agitations. Annadurai famously critiqued the argument for Hindi’s numerical superiority, comparing it to choosing a common crow over a peacock as a national bird. Under his leadership, the party achieved a historic victory in 1967, becoming the first non-Congress party in India to win a state-level election with a clear majority. This era saw the legalization of self-respect marriages, which bypassed traditional Brahminical rituals, and the official renaming of Madras State to Tamil Nadu.

Following Annadurai’s death in 1969, M. Karunanidhi assumed leadership, steering the party through decades of shifting alliances and internal challenges. His tenure was marked by significant political volatility, including the 1976 dismissal of his government during the Emergency and various corruption allegations, though no charges were formally proven in court. Despite these pressures, the DMK remained a major force, eventually transitioning to the leadership of M. K. Stalin in 2018. Today, the party continues to influence national politics, holding 59 seats in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and maintaining a significant presence in the Lok Sabha.
