In short: In the 1984 sci-fi thriller Dreamscape, scientists develop a way to enter the subconscious during REM sleep. What begins as a clinical tool to treat nightmares becomes a weapon for political assassination, where death in the dreamscape translates to death in the real world.

The film follows Alex Gardner, a psychic who uses his abilities for gambling and personal gain. After being recruited by Dr. Paul Novotny and Dr. Jane DeVries, Alex participates in a government-funded project designed to diagnose sleep disorders. By entering the subconscious via REM sleep, psychics can use this method to intentionally connect with others, an approach Novotny likens to how Malaysian Senoi tribes treat dreams as tangible reality.

The project's peaceful intentions are subverted by Bob Blair, a government agent who intends to use the technique for assassination. Blair's plan targets the President of the United States, who is suffering from recurring nightmares of a nuclear holocaust. Blair even assigns Tommy Ray Glatton, a mentally unstable psychic who has previously murdered his own father, to enter the President's dream and kill him. The stakes are absolute: anyone who dies in these dreams also dies in the physical world.

The film's production involved significant creative shifts. The script, which evolved from an 1981 outline by Roger Zelazny, underwent seven months of rewrites by director Joseph Ruben and assistant director Chuck Russell. To maintain filmability, they scaled down massive ideas, such as a nuclear wasteland set in New York City featuring a destroyed Statue of Liberty. They also redesigned the primary antagonist, the 'snake-man,' moving away from an initial 'rat-man' concept to avoid similarities with recent werewolf films like An American Werewolf in London.
