In short: Before the House of Tudor sat on the English throne, there was Ednyfed Fychan. A high-ranking nobleman and master diplomat, he served as the right-hand man to the Princes of Gwynedd for decades, navigating the treacherous politics between Welsh independence and the English Crown.

Ednyfed Fychan served as the 'distain' or seneschal of the Kingdom of Gwynedd, a role roughly equivalent to a modern prime minister. Beginning his recorded service in 1217 under Llywelyn ab Iorwerth, Ednyfed oversaw a transformation of the office from domestic service to that of a chief advisor and agent. He was a versatile statesman, leading diplomatic missions, administering justice, and potentially commanding military actions. Due to his immense impact, he founded a ministerial lineage; for more than thirty years following his passing, his progeny maintained exclusive control of the disteiniaid role until the 1282 Edwardian conquest.

His career was defined by high-stakes diplomacy. He was a key negotiator in the 1218 Treaty of Worcester and the 1222 marriage negotiations between Llywelyn’s daughter and John of Scotland. Even when hostilities flared, Ednyfed was the primary envoy to King Henry III, securing truces and letters of protection for his holdings. Notably, in 1235, Henry III granted Ednyfed a silver cup worth five marks as a gesture of esteem while Ednyfed was preparing for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land—a journey historians believe he completed as a crusading tour of the Levant.

Ednyfed's legacy is both political and genealogical. His descendants were granted special privileges by the Llywelyns, holding lands free from all renders except military service, which fueled their immense wealth. His grandson, Tudur Hen ap Goronwy, established the Penmynydd branch of the family. This lineage eventually produced Owen Tudor, the grandfather of Henry VII. Consequently, Ednyfed represents the House of Tudor's initial notable forebear, the family that governed England between 1485 and 1603.
