In short: For decades, Entertainment Film Distributors has shaped the British cinematic landscape. Founded by a veteran of the industry, this family-led company brought iconic independent films and massive blockbusters to audiences across the United Kingdom and Ireland, proving that independent distribution could rival the reach of major Hollywood studios.

The origins of Entertainment Film Distributors trace back to 1977, when Michael L. Green established the firm alongside his sons, Nigel and Trevor. Michael was already a seasoned industry figure, having worked in film since his teenage years in the 1930s. Before launching this venture, he had previously founded a distributor called Variety in 1972, which he shuttered shortly before forming the new company on 10 November 1977. The business, which was originally incorporated under the name Rewbond Limited, quickly established itself as a significant force in the British market.

The company's trajectory shifted significantly through strategic partnerships with independent production houses. A major breakthrough arrived in 1985 with the release of Teen Wolf, starring Michael J. Fox. Between 1990 and 2010, the distributor maintained a vital relationship with New Line Cinema, bringing high-profile projects like The Lord of the Rings trilogy to UK screens. This era of collaboration ended in 2010 when the parent company, Warner Bros. Pictures, reclaimed the rights for the UK and Ireland. Later, the firm served as the primary UK distributor for The Weinstein Company from 2008 until the onset of the Harvey Weinstein scandal in 2017.

Beyond its commercial successes, the company has been instrumental in bringing critically acclaimed cinema to the public. Its portfolio includes multiple BAFTA and Oscar-winning titles, such as The Artist, Brokeback Mountain, Gosford Park, Million Dollar Baby, and The Departed. Following the passing of Michael L. Green in 2003 and Trevor Green in 2020, the company continues to operate under the leadership of Nigel Green. Today, the firm remains a private limited company based in London, maintaining its legacy as a key player in the independent film distribution sector.
