In short: In 1969, a World Cup qualifying play-off between El Salvador and Honduras escalated beyond the pitch. What began as a high-stakes struggle for football supremacy ended in the Football War, a violent conflict fueled by deep-seated regional tensions and stadium-side unrest.

The El Salvador national football team has a history defined by both athletic milestones and geopolitical upheaval. While the team officially formed in 1921, its most dramatic chapter occurred during the 1970 World Cup qualification process. After winning Group 3, El Salvador faced their traditional rivals, Honduras, in a high-tension play-off. The first leg in Tegucigalpa on 8 June 1969 ended in a 1–0 victory for Honduras and was followed by crowd violence. The return leg in San Salvador saw El Salvador win 3–0, but the intensity triggered even greater unrest. By 14 July, the tensions exacerbated by these matches led to the hundred-hour-long 'Football War'.

Despite the conflict, the team achieved remarkable sporting feats. They qualified for the FIFA World Cup twice, in 1970 and 1982. Their 1970 campaign was particularly notable as they secured qualification on 8 October after a dramatic extra-time victory against Haiti. In the 1982 tournament, however, the squad arrived in Spain with only 20 players—two short of the maximum allowed—as a controversial cost-saving measure. This trip included a 10–1 defeat to Hungary, which remains a World Cup finals record margin of victory.

The team's identity is also rooted in unique cultural moments. Their official anthem, 'Arriba con la Selección', originated as a parody of a popular Colombian song, 'El Pajaro Picón Picón'. On the pitch, legends like Raúl Díaz Arce, the all-time top scorer with 39 goals, and Darwin Cerén, the most capped player with 108 appearances, have defined the squad's eras. Today, the team continues to compete in CONCACAF competitions, playing their home matches at the Estadio Cuscatlán, famously known as 'La Catedral del Espectáculo'.
