In short: The history of Nicaraguan football is a saga of extreme highs and devastating setbacks. While the nation has struggled to find its footing on the global stage, its journey through regional championships and sudden disqualifications reveals a complex, often turbulent sporting identity.

The origins of the Nicaragua national football team are marked by early, heavy defeats. The squad's first recorded international match took' place on 1 May 1929, a trip to El Salvador that ended in a 9–0 loss. Following this, the team entered a period of dormancy, not competing again for over twelve years. Their return to the pitch occurred during the 1941 CCCF Championship in Costa Rica, where the results were equally difficult. Nicaragua lost all four matches in that campaign, including an 8–0 defeat to El Salvador and a 7–2 loss to Costa Rica, ultimately finishing at the bottom of the group.

Despite these early struggles, the federation, founded in 1931, has seen periods of regional success. The team has achieved notable placements in Central American competitions, such as finishing third in the 1957 CCCF Championship and securing sixth place in the 1967 CONCACAF Championship. The nation has also become a regular participant in the CONCACAF Nations League, moving between League A and League B, and has appeared in the Copa Centroamericana on multiple occasions.

However, recent years have been defined by both achievement and administrative heartbreak. While the team successfully qualified for the 2019 Gold Cup and earned direct qualification for the 2023 edition, their progress was halted by a significant ruling. On 12 June 2023, Nicaragua was disqualified from both the Gold Cup and Nations League A due to the fielding of an ineligible player. This administrative error led to their replacement by Trinidad and Tobago. Although the team has continued to compete, the sting of disqualification remains a pivotal moment in their modern footballing history.
