In short: When Colombia's new airport was being built in the late 1950s, officials didn't want a generic title. They sought a name that felt rooted in the local soil, specifically honoring the indigenous culture of the Bogotá Savannah. The result was a name that became globally famous.

During the construction of the airport between 1955 and 1959, the management team, led by René Van Meerbeke, sought a name that was short, easy to pronounce, and 'terrigenous'—meaning of the earth. The goal was to evoke the aboriginal history of the Bogotá Savannah. After intense debate among academics, including Professor Luis López de Mesa and Father Félix Restrepo, the name 'El Dorado' was chosen by decree, originally written as a single word without spaces.

The airport officially entered service in December 1959, replacing the aging Techo International Airport. While the name 'El Dorado' was intended to honor local heritage, the airport's identity has faced modern legal shifts. To pay tribute to the Bumán-born statesman, Law 1529 renamed the facility 'Luis Carlos Galán Sarmiento El Dorado International Airport' during 2012, inserting a gap between 'El' and 'Dorado'. This change was controversial due to the associated costs and the lack of a direct link between Galán and the airport.

Today, the facility is a massive logistical engine. It is the second busiest airport in Latin America and serves as Iberoamerica's most vital cargo hub, processing 760,000 metric tons of cargo in a single year. As of 2024, it is ranked as the 20th most connected airport in the world. The airport's footprint covers 1,700 acres and includes two runways, each 3,800 metres long, facilitating its reputation as 'The Hub of the Americas'.
