How a Filipino Theme Park Avoids the Mundane to Create Pure Fantasy
In short: Enchanted Kingdom in Santa Rosa, Philippines, rejects local architectural themes to preserve its magical atmosphere. Founded by Mario and Cynthia Mamon, the park prioritizes original intellectual property over licensed characters. By blending education with entertainment, this 25-hectare destination has become a significant regional landmark for millions of annual visitors.
The origins of Enchanted Kingdom trace back to the early 1990s, when Mario and Cynthia Mamon sought to build a world-class amusement destination. Inspired by their family outings to local parks and a pivotal visit to Ocean Park in Hong Kong, the couple joined the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions in 1992. This global network proved essential, providing the expertise of designers like Gary Goddard and consultants from International Theme Park Services to ensure the park met rigorous safety and operational standards.
Construction began in August 1994, and the park opened its gates on October 19, 1995. The development philosophy was clear from the start: avoid designs that mirror the visitors' everyday surroundings. Mario Mamon famously rejected initial proposals rooted in local architecture, fearing such designs would shatter the illusion of fantasy. Today, the park is divided into nine distinct zones, ranging from the Victorian-inspired entrance to the 1930s-style Midway Boardwalk and the space-themed Spaceport. These areas house 32 attractions, including the 39.62-meter-high Wheel of Fate and the flight simulator Agila: The EKsperience.
The park's journey has not been without turbulence. It faced significant financial strain during the 1997 Asian financial crisis and later struggled with weather-related attendance drops, such as during Typhoon Haiyan in 2013. Operations were also interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including a closure in early 2022 due to a surge in Omicron cases. Despite these challenges, the park has maintained a focus on original storytelling, featuring proprietary characters like Eldar the Wizard. By emphasizing Filipino values and educational content, Enchanted Kingdom has carved out a unique identity, reaching a record attendance of 1.8 million visitors in 2015.
