A $22.3 million transformation of a botanical landmark
In short: Legoland Florida is more than a plastic brick playground; it is a complex layer of history built atop a 1936 botanical garden. By preserving the original landscape while layering in modern entertainment, the resort creates a unique tension between historic preservation and commercial expansion.
The resort sits on the former site of Cypress Gardens, a landmark that first opened in 1936. When Merlin Entertainments purchased the site for $22.3 million in 2009, they faced a unique challenge: how to integrate a massive theme park into a space with significant historical and botanical value. A joint structure arose, preserving the original botanical gardens that were fully reopened in March 2014 and joined to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places by April 2014.
Construction finished quickly, allowing the site to debut on 15 October 2011, marking a swift development process. While much of the park was new, it repurposed several existing structures. For example, the water park was originally 'Splash Island,' which debuted in 2005 with a Polynesian theme. After the acquisition, it was reworked into the Legoland Water Park, reopening under its new identity on May 26, 2012. Similarly, four original Cypress Gardens attractions were renovated and renamed, including the 'Triple Hurricane' wooden rollercoaster, which became Coastersaurus.
The resort's evolution is marked by constant retheming and expansion. The World of Chima, the park's first new land opened in July 2013, was eventually closed in May 2017 to make way for The Lego Movie World. This cycle of growth continues with the 2026 opening of Lego Galaxy, featuring the Galacticoaster—the first indoor roller coaster in the main park since 2011. This ongoing process demonstrates a strategy of 'adaptive reuse,' where the bones of the past provide the foundation for the brand-driven entertainment of the present.
