The master of the thermal currents and the art of efficient flight
In short: While most birds expend massive energy flapping their wings, the Eurasian griffon vulture has mastered a more economical way to travel. By utilizing soaring techniques, these giants can maintain a metabolic rate just 1.43 times their basal level, allowing them to traverse vast landscapes with remarkable energy efficiency.
The Eurasian griffons (Gyps fulvus) are remarkable biological engineers of thermoregulation and flight. To avoid the high metabolic costs of level flight, which can drive metabolic rates up to 16 times the basal level in other birds, these vultures rely on soaring. This efficiency is matched by their cardiovascular recovery; they can return to a resting heart rate within ten minutes of completing a flight.
Their physical adaptations extend to temperature control. Lacking feathers on their heads, they can manipulate their posture to increase bare skin exposure from 7% to 32%, more than doubling convective heat loss in still air. Additionally, by decoupling core temperature shifts from metabolic activity, they reduce energy and moisture depletion, resulting in a thermal neutral zone broader than most other avian species.
Despite their mastery of the air, these birds face significant terrestrial threats. The primary driver of population decline is the consumption of poisoned baits. In the Pyrenees, food availability has been critically lowered by European Commission rulings regarding bovine spongiform encephalopathy, which prohibit leaving carcasses in fields. This scarcity has even led to reports of Spanish populations occasionally killing weak or unhealthy living animals when carrion is unavailable.
The species maintains a massive presence across the Old World, from the Atlas Mountains to the Altai Mountains. Spain serves as the primary European stronghold, hosting over 90% of the continent's population, with an estimated 30,946 breeding pairs as of 2018. Other notable populations include the world's largest insular group on Crete and significant colonies in the Iberian Peninsula, the Caucasus, and the Iranian plateau.
