In short: From supporting French rapid-response forces in Africa to transporting heads of state, the Super Puma has become a global icon of versatility. Developed in the 197 and redesigned for durability, this aircraft mastered everything from offshore oil rig support to high-stakes combat search and rescue.

The lineage of the Super Puma began with the Aérospatiale SA 330 Puma, a 1965 transport family. During the 1970s, Aérospatiale engineers sought to evolve this design into a more powerful, robust successor. The resulting AS 332 Super Puma featured a redesigned fuselage for improved crashworthiness, a more streamlined nose, and the integration of more powerful Turbomeca Makila turboshaft engines. This upgrade provided a 17% reduction in fuel consumption and greater flight stability compared to its predecessor.

The aircraft was engineered with modularity in mind, offering both a short-fuselage version for 'hot and high' performance and a stretched version for increased cargo or passenger capacity. In the short-fuselage configuration, the helicopter can carry up to 15 passengers, while the stretched variant expands this to 20. Beyond transport, the platform has been adapted for highly specialized roles, including anti-submarine warfare, aerial firefighting, and even as a weaponized platform capable of carrying Exocet anti-ship missiles as of 1987.

Global adoption has been widespread, with the aircraft operating across at least 38 nations by 2005. Its service history is marked by significant geopolitical moments, such as providing the primary rotary-lift capability for French forces during the 1994 Rwandan intervention. While some nations, like Sweden, have retired their fleets in favor of newer models like the NH90, others continue to utilize the platform' or its successors, such as the H215, for critical humanitarian and security missions.
