In short: Launched in 2019 to bridge the gap between college and the NFL, the Alliance of American Football promised a revolution in professional sports. Yet, despite high-profile backing and innovative rule changes, the league imploded in just eight weeks, leaving players stranded and millions in debt in its wake.

Founded by Charlie Ebersol and Bill Polian, the AAF was designed as an upper-level minor league. It debuted on February 9, 2019, with eight centrally owned teams and a roster of experimental rules, such as the 'sky judge' for officiating and the 'onside conversion' to replace traditional kickoffs. The league aimed to capture fan attention with faster, more efficient gameplay, targeting a two-hour broadcast window by eliminating television timeouts and reducing commercials.

The league's financial structure was complex, operating as an interlocked web of Delaware limited liability companies. While it attracted significant investors like Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund and MGM Resorts International, it faced immediate instability. In February 2019, Tom Dundon joined as chairman, pledging a theoretical $250 million investment. However, Dundon later clarified he had not provided a lump sum and reserved the right to withdraw his support at any time. By April 2, 2019, after only eight weeks of play, Dundon ordered the suspension of all football operations.

The collapse was abrupt and chaotic. Players learned of the shutdown via the internet, facing immediate eviction from team housing and the loss of health insurance for injuries sustained during the season. The league filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on April 17, 2019, reporting $11.3 million in assets against $48.3 million in liabilities. The failure underscored the extreme difficulty of sustaining a professional football league, as the AAF’s attempt to integrate sports betting technology and unique fan incentives ultimately failed to materialize or provide the necessary financial foundation.
