In short: From a vision to revitalize the sport across the continent, the European League of Football (ELF) grew into a sprawling 16-team network. Yet, despite its rapid expansion and high-profile partnerships, the league recently faced a dramatic schism that left it navigating insolvency while attempting to forge a new identity.

Founded in late 2020 by Patrick Esume and Zeljko Karajica, the ELF was designed to professionalize American football in Europe. Unlike its predecessor, NFL Europe, which relied heavily on American imports, the ELF prioritized homegrown talent. The league's strategy included an 'ELF Academy' intended to develop local players into potential NFL prospects by focusing on skills required for both European and American play.

The league expanded rapidly across 11 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, and Turkey. It secured a landmark agreement with the NFL in March 2021 to utilize historic team names like the Hamburg Sea Devils and Frankfurt Galaxy. While it faced initial skepticism from established German football bodies, the ELF saw significant growth, reaching 16 teams by its final 2025 season before a major restructuring occurred.

The landscape fractured following the 2025 season when eleven of the league's primary teams—including the Rhein Fire and Vienna Vikings—departed to form the European Football Alliance (EFA). A planned reunification in early 2026 collapsed on January 15, 2026, after the EFA cited a lack of financial transparency from the ELF. By March 23, 2026, insolvency proceedings were initiated against the ELF GmbH due to failed investor funding.

Despite these systemic challenges, the league continues operations under self-administration. It maintains unique rules, such as using NCAA overtime procedures—a rarity in European sports leagues—and a focus on developing a sustainable professional structure that balances international exchange opportunities with local development.
