Beyond the Jedi robes, Ewan McGregor is a globetrotting motorcyclist and dedicated humanitarian.
In short: From the gritty streets of Edinburgh in Trainspotting to the iconic lightsaber of Obi-Wan Kenobi, Ewan McGregor has defined a generation of cinema. Yet, his life off-screen is equally adventurous, marked by thousands of miles on a motorcycle and a long-standing commitment to global humanitarian work through UNICEF.
Born in 1971 in Perth, Scotland, McGregor’s path to stardom began at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His breakout performance as Mark Renton in the 1996 film Trainspotting catapulted him to international fame, a role he would later revisit in 2017. His versatility is evident in his diverse filmography, ranging from the musical spectacle of Moulin Rouge! to the psychological depth of The Ghost Writer and his Emmy-winning portrayal of fashion designer Halston in 2021.
McGregor’s passion for motorcycling has fueled a series of ambitious documentary projects. Starting in 2004 with Long Way Round, he and friend Charley Boorman traversed the globe on BMW motorcycles, covering over 22,000 miles from London to New York. These journeys, which continued through 2025 with Long Way Home, are more than travelogues; they integrate his role as a UNICEF ambassador. During these trips, he has visited remote regions in countries like India, Nepal, and the Republic of Congo to support immunization efforts and witness humanitarian programs firsthand.
His personal life reflects a blend of global influences and deep-rooted connections. A naturalized US citizen since 2016, he has navigated a career that spans Broadway, the West End, and Hollywood, earning a star on the Walk of Fame in 2024. Whether he is playing a villain in Birds of Prey or narrating a Guillermo del Toro film, McGregor maintains a grounded perspective, often returning to his Scottish roots, such as performing with his childhood pipe band at his estate in 2025.
