How a British drama transformed a Russian aristocrat's life into a television spectacle
In short: Banished to a hotel attic after the October Revolution, Count Alexander Rostov faces decades of house arrest. This British adaptation of Amor Towles' novel explores the life of an aristocrat navigating a changing Russia, featuring Ewan McGregor in a performance that earned critical acclaim and major award nominations.
The journey of A Gentleman in Moscow from page to screen was a multi-year evolution. Initially announced in 2017 with Kenneth Branagh attached to star, the project underwent significant changes before Ewan McGregor took on the lead role in 2022. Showrunner Ben Vanstone led the production, which aimed to expand the narrative scope beyond the original novel. A notable creative shift involved the character of Anna Urbanova, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Vanstone intentionally broadened her role to provide the character with more agency, addressing the limitation that the source material remained strictly focused on the Count's perspective.
The production process relied on meticulous visual storytelling to convey the passage of time. McGregor collaborated closely with director Sam Miller to define the Count's appearance, opting for a perm and dark dye that naturally faded during filming to simulate the character's aging. Similarly, Winstead's character arc is reflected in her transition from glamorous, bleach-blonde attire to a more conservative, natural aesthetic. This attention to detail extended to the filming locations, which were situated entirely within England. Production crews utilized sites such as Bolton Town Hall, Liverpool Town Hall, and Leeds Civic Hall to recreate the atmosphere of the period, though work was temporarily halted by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
Upon its premiere on 29 March 2024, the series received generally favorable responses. Critics highlighted McGregor's debonair performance, with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 91% approval rating based on 35 reviews. While some reviewers, such as Alison Herman of Variety, questioned the pacing and the use of the historical setting, others like Jack Seale of The Guardian praised the lead performance. The project's impact was further solidified by industry recognition, including nominations for McGregor at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards and the 30th Critics' Choice Awards in February 2025.
