The man who forced the world's most dominant striker to tap
In short: In 2010, Fabrício Werdum achieved what many thought impossible: he ended Fedor Emelianenko’s 28-fight unbeaten streak. By forcing a submission from one of MMA's greatest legends, Werdum cemented his status as a technical powerhouse capable of dismantling the most feared striking machines in the sport.
Fabrício Werdum's path to the top was defined by a unique transition from Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) specialist to heavy-hitting MMA champion. Born in Porto Alegre, Werdum first entered the world of BJJ after being choked unconscious by an ex-boyfriend. Following this early period, he studied with Marcio Corleta, ultimately securing four BJJ world titles and induction into the ADCC Hall of Fame.
Werdum’s technical evolution was notable for its pace. While still a purple belt in Spain, he began teaching BJJ and won his first World IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship in 2003. He later moved to Brazil to train at Chute Boxe Academy, specifically to refine his Muay Thai striking. This hybrid approach allowed him to balance elite grappling with the aggression needed for the UFC's heavyweight division.
His career is marked by historic 'giant-killing.' In June 2010, Werdum secured a triangle/armbar submission against Fedor Emelianenko in just 1:09 of the first round. This victory made him the only man to hold submission wins over both Emelianenko and Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira, two former PRIDE Heavyweight Champions. He eventually unified the UFC heavyweight titles in June 2015 after defeating Cain Velasquez.
Despite his accolades, Werdum's career faced significant hurdles, including a high-profile doping violation for trenbolone in 2018. This resulted in a suspension that was later reduced from two years to 10 months following substantial assistance. Fight Matrix currently places him at number five among every heavyweight MMA combatant throughout history.
