How a Dutch football club transformed from a cricket team into a professional institution
In short: Founded in 1883, FC Dordrecht has navigated over a century of name changes, financial struggles, and tactical evolution. From its origins as a cricket club to its modern identity in the Eerste Divisie, the team has survived by constantly reinventing its structure, partnerships, and approach to professional football.
The club began on 16 August 1883 as the Dordrechtsche Cricket Club. It gradually shifted its focus toward association football, renaming itself in 1891 and eventually abandoning cricket entirely by 1899. The organization entered the professional era in 1954, marking the start of a complex history defined by frequent rebranding. Between 1972 and 2002, the club operated under several titles, including DS '79, SVV/Dordrecht '90, and Dordrecht '90, before settling on its current name, FC Dordrecht, in 2002.
The club's tactical history is equally notable. In 1910, the team hired Jimmy Hogan, an English inside forward who implemented the Combination Game and emphasized physical fitness. His influence was so significant that the Royal Dutch Football Association recruited him to manage the Netherlands national team for a victory against Germany that same year. Decades later, the club experienced a high-profile moment in 1981 when Johan Cruyff, widely considered the most famous player in the club's history, made three appearances for the team during its time as DS '79.
Financial and structural instability have often dictated the club's trajectory. After struggling with low attendance and budget constraints, the club adopted new strategies, such as forming partnerships with larger teams like Feyenoord, Norwich City, and ADO Den Haag to secure loan players. These efforts helped the club navigate the competitive Eerste Divisie and occasionally reach the top-tier Eredivisie, most recently in 2014. Despite periods of relegation and financial pressure, the club has maintained its presence at the Stadion Krommedijk, which has served as its home since 1948 and underwent a major renovation in 1998–99.
The club's legacy also includes pioneering moments in management. In 1990, Margo Gerrits was appointed as commercial manager at Dordrecht '90, becoming the first female manager in professional football. Today, the club continues to operate as a professional entity, balancing the need for long-term player contracts with the realities of the Dutch football league system, where it remains a fixture in the second tier.
