From door-to-door sales to the small screen's most relatable housewife
In short: Before becoming a household name in British comedy, Fay Ripley sold menswear door-to-door and performed as a children's clown. Her journey from a "horrible and penniless" life in a London flat to starring in breakthrough hits highlights the grit behind the glamour of the acting profession.
Fay Ripley's path to stardom was marked by significant financial and professional hurdles. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1990, she struggled to find consistent work. To survive, she took on a variety of jobs, including selling timeshares on Kensington High Street and Oxford Street, working as a health club receptionist, and spending five years as a children's entertainer known as "Miss Chief the Clown." She eventually used the earnings from her clowning work to secure a mortgage on her first flat.
Her breakthrough came in 1996 with the ITV series Cold Feet. Ripley originally auditioned for the role of Rachel but was cast as Jenny, a "northern housewife." To prepare, she spent time mimicking local Manchester accents. The role became a defining part of her career, earning her a British Comedy Awards nomination in 1999 and a British Academy Television Award nomination in 2000. Despite the show's success, Ripley chose to leave after three series to maintain her life in London and pursue more diverse roles.
Ripley has since balanced a prolific acting career with authorship, releasing three recipe books between 2009 and 2014. While she is often celebrated for her comedic timing, she has also tackled heavy dramatic roles, such as a murderer in The Green-Eyed Monster (2001) and a domestic abuse victim in The Stretford Wives (2002). She notably avoids roles involving post-mortem examinations or murder investigations, preferring to focus on characters that feel more "true to life."
