In short: Each autumn, Katmai National Park hosts Fat Bear Week, a digital tournament celebrating the extreme weight gain of brown bears. As these animals prepare for months of fasting, the public votes on which bear has most successfully packed on the pounds, turning biological survival into a global, interactive conservation event.

Fat Bear Week, founded in 2014 by former ranger Mike Fitz, highlights the biological phenomenon of hyperphagia. During the summer and autumn, brown bears in Alaska’s Katmai National Park consume massive quantities of sockeye salmon to build the fat reserves necessary for winter hibernation. An adult male can gain over 500 pounds, sometimes reaching a total weight of 1,200 pounds before entering hibernation in late autumn. This weight is critical, as bears do not eat or drink for months and can lose up to a third of their body mass while dormant.

The competition functions as a single-elimination bracket, where the public votes online based on before-and-after photographs, biographies, and live webcam footage from the Brooks River. To qualify, bears must be observed feeding in the park during both summer and fall. While the event is a lighthearted way to engage the public in wildlife conservation, it also provides a window into the harsh realities of nature. In 2024, for instance, the event was delayed after a rare instance of inter-bear predation was captured on the park's cameras.

Beyond the spectacle, the event has become a significant digital phenomenon. In 2025, the tournament drew over 1.5 million votes, reflecting its growth from a simple Facebook poll into a major annual tradition. The initiative serves multiple purposes: it promotes bear conservation, encourages interest in the Katmai ecosystem, and increases accessibility to the remote park. By humanizing the bears through nicknames and detailed biographies, the National Park Service and Explore.org have successfully turned the study of seasonal weight gain into a tool for environmental advocacy and public education.
