In short: Spanning 192.83 acres, Gateway Arch National Park is a tiny outlier in the National Park Service. While most parks protect vast wilderness, this site commemorates the Louisiana Purchase and the complex history of American westward expansion through a massive, 630-foot steel catenary arch.

The park's identity is defined by the Gateway Arch, a steel structure designed by Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen and German-American engineer Hannskarl Bandel. Originally conceived as a 590-foot catenary arch in 1947, the design was modified over 15 years to be 630 feet tall and 630 feet wide at its base. This modification, which added 40 feet to both height and width, created a shape that is not a pure inverted catenary but rather an elongated form that transfers weight downward to create a soaring effect.

This location possesses a complex past, situated close to where the Lewis and Clark Expedition began. It commemorates the Louisiana Purchase and the subsequent westward movement of pioneers, as well as the first civil government west of the Mississippi River. It also serves as a memorial to the debates over slavery raised by the Dred Scott case, which originated at the nearby Old Courthouse. This courthouse, which features a dome similar to the United States Capitol, was built during the American Civil War.

The park's designation has been a subject of debate. Redesignated from the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial in 2018, some critics argued that the 'national park' label should be reserved for conserved natural landscapes rather than sites of primarily historical and architectural significance. Others suggested the change was intended to boost tourism. Today, the park includes a 140,000 sq ft museum and a unique tram system that carries visitors to an observation room at the top of the monument.
