The resilient history of FC Annecy, a French football club reborn from its own ashes
In short: Founded in 1927, FC Annecy has navigated a turbulent century of professional peaks and amateur valleys. From being forced into dissolution in 1993 to securing a minority investment from Aston Villa’s owners in 2026, the club’s journey reflects the unpredictable nature of French football’s lower-tier landscape and administrative complexities.
The original Football Club d'Annecy spent decades as an amateur side before briefly turning professional in 1942. Despite winning the French amateur championship in the 1959–60 season, the club struggled to maintain momentum. A resurgence in the 1980s saw the team climb to the second tier by 1988, but financial and structural instability led to the club's collapse in October 1993. On that same day, a new entity was formed to take its place, starting five divisions below the previous team's position.
The new club spent years rebuilding, eventually climbing back through the ranks of the French football pyramid. A pivotal moment occurred in 2022, when the team secured promotion to Ligue 2, marking its return to the second tier after a 29-year absence. The following season, the club demonstrated its competitive spirit by reaching the semi-finals of the Coupe de France, a feat not achieved since 1942. This period was not without controversy; in 2021, the club faced fines from the FFF for coaching irregularities involving the misrepresentation of head coach roles.
Administrative survival has been a recurring theme for the club. In August 2023, Annecy faced relegation to the third tier but was granted a reprieve by a French court following the administrative demotion of Sochaux. Most recently, in June 2026, the club entered a new era by announcing that V Sports, the holding company behind Aston Villa, had acquired a minority stake of approximately 30%. This partnership signals a shift in the club's trajectory as it seeks to stabilize its position in the professional ranks.
