In short: Founded in 1948 under the Communist regime, Dinamo București became a titan of Romanian football, securing 18 league titles. Yet, despite its storied past and European semi-final pedigree, the club has recently faced severe financial instability, insolvency, and its first-ever relegation from the top flight in 2022.

Established in May 1948 as the sporting arm of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Dinamo București quickly cemented its status as a dominant force in Romanian football. The club spent nearly its entire history in the top tier, Liga I, claiming 18 league titles and 13 Romanian Cups. Its international reputation grew significantly in the 1983–84 season, when it became the first Romanian club to reach the semi-finals of the European Cup, ultimately falling to Liverpool. Throughout the decades, the club produced legendary performances, including a record-breaking 11–0 victory against Crusaders Belfast in 1973, which remains the largest margin of victory in European Cup history.

The club's fortunes shifted dramatically in the 21st century as it grappled with ownership changes and mounting financial crises. In 2014, the club entered insolvency for the first time, leading to a period of instability that hampered its European ambitions. A second insolvency followed in 2021 after a failed takeover by a Spanish company, which left the club with approximately 7 million euros in debt and led to a mass exodus of players. This turmoil culminated in 2022, when Dinamo suffered its first-ever relegation to Liga II after losing a promotion/relegation play-off against Universitatea Cluj.

Despite these setbacks, the club's resilience remains a defining trait. Following a change in ownership to the Red&White company in 2023, Dinamo secured a dramatic return to Liga I. The promotion was marked by a record-breaking 8–5 aggregate victory over Argeș Pitești in the play-off. Today, the club continues to navigate its recovery, balancing its rich heritage as one of the country's two most successful teams with the modern realities of professional football management, while maintaining its intense rivalry with FCSB in the Eternal Derby.
