In short: Founded in 1902 as a railway sports club, Debreceni VSC has transformed from a domestic underdog into a European competitor. After reaching the Champions League group stages in 2009, the club has navigated shifting ownership, stadium upgrades, and intense local rivalries to become one of Hungary's most storied football institutions.

Debreceni Vasutas Sport Club, founded on 12 March 1902, first reached the Hungarian top tier, Nemzeti Bajnokság I, during the 1943–44 season. While the club has a long history, it experienced a dramatic surge in domestic prominence during the early 2000s. This era saw them secure their first Hungarian league title in the 2004–05 season, marking the beginning of a period where they became the second most successful club in Hungary since 2000, ultimately winning seven league titles in the 2010s.

The club's international zenith occurred during the 2009–10 season when they reached the UEFA Champions League group stages. This success was so significant that their home ground, the Oláh Gábor utcai Stadion, lacked the necessary UEFA criteria to host such matches, forcing the club to play these high-profile fixtures at the Ferenc Puskás Stadium instead. They followed this with a group stage appearance in the 2010–11 UEFA Europa League.

Ownership and stability have remained complex themes for the club. Following a period of decline in the late 2010s due to lost governmental support, the club underwent several leadership changes. In 2020, the local government purchased 73 percent of the shares after Gábor Szima resigned. By 2026, the club entered a new era when Stott Capital, an English investment firm owned by Stockport County chairman Mark Stott, acquired a controlling stake, promising to maintain the club's independence while leveraging its established talent pipeline.
