How a Romanian Railway Club Became a 21st-Century Football Powerhouse
In short: Founded in 1907 as a railway workers' sports club, CFR Cluj spent decades in obscurity before transforming into a dominant force. By leveraging strategic foreign talent and substantial investment, the team broke a 17-year capital-city monopoly, securing eight league titles and multiple European group stage appearances in the 21st century.
CFR Cluj, or Căile Ferate Române, began as the Kolozsvári Vasutas Sport Club in 1907 while Transylvania was part of Austria-Hungary. For most of the 20th century, the club fluctuated between lower divisions, enduring mergers and financial instability. It was not until the 21st century that the club emerged as a titan of Romanian football, fueled by the backing of former owner Árpád Pászkány and a shift toward recruiting international players from South America and Western Europe.
The club's modern ascent began in earnest with its 2004 promotion to Liga I. In 2008, CFR Cluj achieved a historic milestone by winning its first national championship, ending a 17-year streak of dominance by Bucharest-based teams. This victory sparked a golden era, characterized by 17 domestic trophies—including eight league titles—all won after the year 2000. Between 2017 and 2022, the club achieved an unprecedented feat in modern Romanian football by winning five consecutive league titles.
Beyond domestic success, CFR Cluj has frequently represented Romania in European competitions. The club has qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stages three times, the Europa League group stages three times, and the Conference League group stages twice. Notably, in the 2012–13 Champions League, they set a record for a Romanian team by earning 10 points in a group that included Manchester United, Galatasaray, and SC Braga. Despite facing severe financial crises and insolvency proceedings in the mid-2010s, the club has consistently managed to rebuild, maintaining its status as a formidable competitor on both national and continental stages.
