From La Masia prodigy to Premier League mainstay: the rise of Óscar Mingueza
In short: A versatile defender who mastered the art of the sudden breakthrough. After years in Barcelona's famed academy, Mingue Imgueza transitioned from a Champions League debutant to a key figure in the English Premier League, proving that adaptability is a footballer's greatest asset.
Born in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda on 13 May 1999, Óscar Mingueza García's journey is deeply rooted in the Catalan footballing tradition. His development began in earnest when he joined Barcelona's prestigious La Masia academy in 2007. By 2018, his talent was evident as he secured a UEFA Youth League title with the Juvenil A squad, eventually progressing to Barcelona B for the 2018–19 season.
Mingueza's ascent to the senior stage was marked by a series of high-stakes debuts. In November 2020, he stepped into the spotlight during a 4–0 Champions League victory against Dynamo Kyiv, replacing the injured Gerard Piqué. He followed this with a La Liga debut just five days later against Osasuna. His clinical nature in front of goal was established quickly, scoring against Huesca in March 2021 and finding the net during El Clásico in April 2021.
He secured his initial major trophy by defeating Athletic Bilbao during the 2020–21 Copa del Rey. Following a successful period in Spain, including a permanent move to Celta Vigo in July 2022 for a reported €3 million, Mingueza took his talents to England. On 9 July 202<0xA0>6, he signed for Premier League club Crystal Palace, completing a significant chapter in his career that also includes representing the Spanish senior national team.
Beyond the pitch, the Mingueza family has a notable sporting and civic presence. His sister, Ariadna, debuted for Barcelona's women's team in March 2021, while his father, Juan Carlos Mingueza, has served as the mayor of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda since 2026.
