A road trip to find a woman who never wanted to be found
In short: Five dysfunctional friends embark on a journey across Goa, driven by secrets and misplaced loyalties. While one man seeks his lost love, the others are fleeing their own pasts—only to discover that some destinations are reached not by following a map, but by confronting what we leave behind.
Directed by Homi Adajania, Finding Fanny is a satirical road film set against the backdrop of Goa. The narrative follows Ferdinand 'Ferdie' Pinto as he attempts to locate his one true love, Fanny Fernandes. However, the journey serves as a catalyst for the group's internal fractures. While Ferdie navigates with incompetence—even leading the group into Karnataka due to an inability to read maps—the other passengers harbor private motives: Savio Da Gama hides his lack of wealth, and Angie realizes her marriage was born of missed opportunities rather than true choice.
The production was a labor of meticulous cultural research. Adajania spent a month in Salvador do Mundo studying local Goan Catholics to construct the fictional village of Pocolim, which he described as a 'hybrid Marquezian Indian village.' The screenplay was adapted from a 200-page novel by Kersi Khambatta, who wrote the scenes chapter by chapter like a literary work. This dedication to nuance is reflected in the casting; actors were pushed toward specific emotional arcs, such as Naseeruddin Shah adopting a mid-range voice to portray a character moving from 'borderline idiotic' vulnerability to inner strength.
The film faced significant hurdles before its 2014 release, including pushback from the Censor Board of India over 'vulgar' dialogue and multiple rejections from the Animal Welfare Board. Despite these obstacles, the film premiered in India on September 1, 2014, and was later screened at the Busan International Film Festival. Ultimately, the journey concludes not with a romantic reunion, but with a poignant realization: Fanny had moved on, married four times, and never acknowledged Ferdie's existence, leaving the travelers to find their own resolutions.
