In short: From decades of conference dominance to a bold, aborted bid for the highest level of college football, the Rattlers have built a legacy of championships and controversy. Discover how this Tallahassee powerhouse navigated the shifting landscape of the NCAA and HBCU football history.

The Florida A&M Rattlers football program, based in Tallahassee, holds one of the most decorated histories in the sport. The team has secured 38 conference championships—comprising 31 outright titles and 7 shared—including 29 SIAC titles, eight MEAC titles, and one SWAC title. Their championship tally is a subject of nuance: while the program claims 17 black college football national championships, they note that 15 of these come from official HBCU selectors, with the 2021 title stemming from an NCAA power ranking of FCS HBCU teams.

The program's trajectory has seen significant structural shifts. Following an extensive period within the MEAC, the Rattlers entered the SWAC East Division for the autumn 2021 campaign. Their history includes a period as an NCAA Division I-AA independent between 1984 and 1985. Notably, in 1978, the school successfully petitioned the NCAA for Division I classification, becoming the I-AA National Champions that very same year.

Beyond the wins, the Rattlers have faced moments of high-stakes tension. In 2004, the program attempted to move up to Division I-A (now FBS), a move that would have made them the only HBCU at the highest level of college football, but the bid was ultimately aborted. More recently, the program has navigated administrative and disciplinary hurdles, including a 202 lack of eligibility for 20 players that nearly forced a 2022 forfeit, and a 2023 suspension of football activities following the filming of a rap video in the locker room.
