The rise, fall, and historic resurgence of the Prairie View A&M Panthers football program
In short: Once a dominant force in black college football, the Prairie View A&M Panthers endured a staggering 80-game losing streak that nearly erased the program. Today, the team has reclaimed its competitive edge, transforming from a winless squad into a conference champion playing in a modern, multimillion-dollar stadium.
Under the legendary coach Billy Nicks, who served from 1945 to 1965, the Prairie View A&M Panthers were a powerhouse. Nicks, often compared to Bear Bryant, secured eight Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) championships and five black college national titles. His influence was so profound that he maintained a pipeline of talent by leveraging his relationships with high school coaches across Texas, often ensuring the state's best players headed to 'The Hill.'
The program's fortunes shifted dramatically following Nicks' retirement in 1965. As the end of Jim Crow allowed predominantly white institutions to recruit black athletes, the talent drain hit HBCUs hard. By the late 1980s, the program was in crisis, marred by financial mismanagement, player boycotts, and allegations of fraud against coach Haney Catchings. In 1990, the university shuttered all sports except track and field, and when football returned in 1991, it lacked scholarships and resources, leading to a historic 80-game losing streak that lasted until 1998.
The road to recovery was arduous, but the program eventually found its footing. In 2009, the Panthers achieved a perfect 9–0 conference record and won the SWAC Championship. The program's revitalization was cemented in 2016 with the opening of the $60 million Panther Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility capable of seating 15,000 fans. Today, the Panthers continue to compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision, marking a complete turnaround from their darkest era.
