In short: From the MLB's westward push to the NHL's recent successes, expansion is a high-stakes gamble. While leagues seek new revenue and larger populations, new teams often face a steep climb, struggling with inexperienced rosters and massive startup costs before they can find championship glory.

Expansion is a strategic tool used by sports leagues to capture growing markets and increase popularity. In North America, this often follows demographic shifts. For example, during the first half of the 20th century, Major League Baseball was concentrated north and east of St. Louis, Missouri. As the U.S. population doubled and moved south and west, MLB expanded to forestall rival interests, growing from 16 teams to its current 30-team membership.

However, the process is fraught with financial and competitive risks. New franchises must often pay significant expansion fees and manage high startup costs for stadiums and facilities. On the field, expansion teams frequently struggle because they are often stocked with veterans nearing retirement, inexperienced players, or less talented free agents. This lack of cohesion and talent often leads to poor performance in inaugural seasons.

Despite these hurdles, parity-promoting mechanisms like salary caps and drafts can facilitate rapid success. The Vegas Golden Knights reached the 2018 Stanley Cup Final in their first year, and the Milwaukee Bucks won the 1971 NBA Finals in just their third season. Conversely, the NFL presents a much harder challenge; the fastest turnaround for a post-merger expansion team to win a Super Bowl was 27 seasons, achieved by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2002 season.

Expansion is not always about entirely new cities. Some leagues use it to revive dormant histories. For instance, the NBA retrospectively considers the New Orleans Pelicans an expansion team because the franchise was established in 2002 following the relocation of the Charlotte Hornets.
