In short: When the COVID-19 pandemic halted touring, Hayley Williams retreated to her Nashville home. What emerged was not a rock anthem, but a stripped-down folk record born from heartbreak, grief, and the quiet ritual of replacing withered flowers in a vase.

Released on February 5, 2021, *Flowers for Vases / Descansos* represents a significant departure for Paramore frontwoman Hayley Williams. Moving away from the band's signature pop-rock, Williams crafted an intimate, solo folk project recorded entirely in her Nashville home during the pandemic lockdowns. As the sole writer and performer, she played every instrument, including vocals, drums, piano, bass, and guitar. The project was engineered and produced by Daniel James, who previously provided string arrangements for the 2017 Paramore release *After Laughter*. Engineer Carlos de la Garza also contributed to the production process.

The album's title reflects a duality of renewal and mourning. The first half, 'Flowers for Vases,' was inspired by a mundane grocery list entry, symbolizing the act of breathing vitality back into her life. The second half, 'descansos'—Spanish for 'rest'—refers to roadside memorials placed at sites of sudden death. This concept was drawn from Clarissa Pinkola Estés’s book *Women Who Run with the Wolves*, which describes how humans create their own 'descansos' to honor past versions of themselves and move forward. The album's release was a surprise, with Williams only announcing the project via Instagram one day before it arrived. Seven months later, on September 10, 2021, the album was released on vinyl in two different editions.

The record is deeply autobiographical, touching on themes of depression and the trauma of fleeing an abusive stepfather in 2002. Even the visual identity is rooted in personal memory; the cover, photographed by Lindsey Byrnes, features Williams in a jacuzzi—a 'ridiculous quarantine purchase'—under red lighting. To add a layer of nostalgia, the tracks 'Good Grief' and the title track incorporate ambient audio from Williams's very first Halloween, captured on VHS tapes. The album's themes of separation were influenced by Williams's relationship with musician Chad Gilbert. Additionally, the track 'My Limb' was partially shared with fans through a hand-delivered CD on the night of the 2021 Wolf Moon.
