The man who built a cage for time to save existence
In short: To prevent a multiversal war, one man orchestrated a massive cosmic deception. He created the Time Variance Authority (TVA) not just to manage history, but to imprison his own variants and isolate a single timeline. Discover how this ultimate act of preservation became an eternal prison.
The series finale reveals that 'He Who Remains' is the architect behind the TVA. In the 31st century, several variants of himself discovered alternative universes and attempted to conquer them, sparking a devastating multiversal war. To end this conflict, He Who Remains harnessed a creature called Alioth to isolate his specific timeline and established the TVA as a mechanism to prevent any further branching paths.
The narrative explores the moral gray area of this preservation. While he saved existence from total collapse, he did so by creating a facade where agents—who are actually variants of each other—work to prune 'unwanted' branches. The episode highlights the contrast between his role as a savior and his status as a weary jailer who offered Loki and Sylvie a choice: kill him to unleash an uncontrollable multiverse or succeed him in maintaining the singular timeline.
The production intentionally crafted He Who Remains to embody this complexity, with director Kate Herron describing him as a character where 'no one is completely good or completely bad.' His solitude was even used as a creative touchstone for the isolation felt during COVID-19 lockdowns. The ultimate irony of his existence is revealed when Sylvie kills him, shattering the singular timeline and creating a multiverse that can no longer be pruned by the very authority he built to control it.
The episode's conclusion serves as a pivot point for the franchise. By replacing the statues of the Time-Keepers with a statue of one of his variants, the show signals the end of the TVA's original purpose and the birth of a chaotic new reality. This transition was specifically designed to provide 'propulsive energy' into the second season while closing the first chapter of Loki's evolution.
